Of the comments perused, I'd say - let's hope LKY is, like how he's always been, FAR-sighted, and 3 steps ahead of the rest.
Undoubtedly, it is the great men like LKY who steered Singapore to her current success. Despite our gripes about life getting harder (materially, at least) and widening income gaps, what I can see is a success story which many countries strive to emulate and a benchmark to outdo.
We need heart, sure. But we also need a mechanism to maintain our success, to ensure we do not trip ourselves up, to prevent us from dawdling while we expound on the necessity to have heart.
Hard to achieve both.
Some countries fight to overturn their supposed dictators, their corrupt officials. Subsequently, these men fall from power and with them, the country itself. Riots, fighting for control... cause investors to pull out, tourists to stay away, the people to suffer.
At the end of the day, what is right and what is wrong? What is the right thing to do?
The people talk but when pushed for alternatives, they have none.
Who does not want freedom? We all want to do what we like but that is detrimental to society. I still feel society needs to have someone in control of it. Why? While there are intelligent people who understand how their actions affect society and lead themselves well, there are also others who *to put it plainly* are buggers who cannot seem to live like a decent human being.
